A Young Girl Defending Herself against Eros (Published Title)

A Young Girl Defending Herself against Eros (Publiburned Title)

Object Description

A young nude woguy sits with her arms outextended, pushing amethod a winged boy. He is Cupid, the god of love, holding up an arrowhead to pierce her. The title says that the young woguy is trying to defend herself, yet she smiles and struggles unconvincingly versus the mischievous little god.Visitors to the Paris exhibitions of the 1870s and also 1880s loved William-Adolphe Bouguereau"s paintings. The Museum"s painting repeats a bigger composition that Bouguereau made for the Paris Salon in 1880; a viewer probably witnessed the larger variation there and also asked for a smaller one for private viewing.Bouguereau put his supernatural fantasy in an idyllic, Arcadian landscape. In truth, he made this complace in his studio, copying the landscape from the surrounding French countryside and also utilizing one of his favorite models.
