You are watching: How far can you see from a plane
So if someone could explain just how the light from a mountain 760 mile away can be seen and also how refraction functions at high altitudes I would certainly appreciate it.

I looked at that video, and likewise the original source video.
There"s no evidence presented whatsoever, the what we space looking in ~ is Baja California in ~ all. The guy just says so.
So we room left with perhaps 4 hypotheses:its Baja and the entire human being community with a few exceptions, from old Greece to space station visitors, and all.of contemporary science, are incorrect.it"s Baja and also some weird optical result that pipeline a pretty an excellent visual illustration of that in the video.its Baja and also the airplane location is misreported, despite GPS.its not Baja.
My money"s on anything however 1.

I made some observaton ~ above google earth and also on google maps. Ns think the price is that what was taped was no Baja California, however some mountain adjacent with low land extended with dusty waiting or fog.
The proof is the the highest possible mountain ~ above the peninsula is around 2 miles and the length of California penisula is 760 miles. The ratio is 1/380. But on the photograph the height/length ratio is about 1/50.

It"s tough to translate long-range, high-zoom photography of horizons. Because that photography far from horizons, you have the right to usually do the assumption that the air tower is not really thick and that light travels in directly lines. However, looking along the horizon, you are looking through a maximum-density shaft of wait which probably has actually temperature and density variations nearly parallel to your line of sight. Weird ingredient happens.
For instance, the Fata Morgana mirage deserve to interpose photo of the sky in between the picture of nearer ground/sea and the image of a more distant tall object:
That seems to me the most most likely explanation because that the sky-colored feature labeled "Gulf of Baja" in your linked video:
Identifying which hill peaks room visible in the photo would be an interesting project, but would call for substantially much more information around the location and direction the the filming than is given, and also would likewise require more information about the topography the Texas (and possibly northern Mexico) than I have actually off the height of my head. I have actually seen this done through Google Earth and other landmarks. Main Texas is flat, however southwestern Texas is in the northern end of the Sierra Madre oriental mountain range. Some features that should appear in the foreground, follow me the claimed line of sight, space the mountains around Fort Davis and also the hills on either side of the Rio Grande; the distance from the asserted location come the Rio Grande is constant with the video"s computed horizon street of around 230 miles.
In addition to mirages including layers that fake skies under your far-off mountaintops, the is possible to view around Earth"s curvature many thanks to atmospheric refraction. Because that a feeling of how tough that is, consider this collection of photos native a Mediterranean sunset in Marseilles by Alain Origné,
where the irregular function at the bottom is no a cloud yet is the optimal of that the Pyrenees
visible about Earth"s curve,
I don"t have enough French to get much native Origné"s internet pages, yet there space two nice English-language blurbs at Atmospheric Optics.

There"s a many mirage result in this sunset photo, consisting of the environment-friendly flash above the sun and a small hint the Fata Morgana appearing as a horizontal line of sunlight below the hill peaks. The distance here is 170 miles.
